I am guessing this is for a class… so I will say that you should hit all the major tourist/historical spots in the US.
Take all sorts of methods of group traveling into consideration.
-Planes -Buses -Rental Vans -Trains
Then find hotel prices in the cities with attraction (like Las Vegas, Anaheim, Washington DC, Grand Canyon, SF, etc.)
Contact Amtrak. Ask for their latest catalog. It has routes, prices, stops and has different plans.
