You should definitely drop by Byron Bay. It is little surf town 2 hours south of Surfers. Very laid back vibes, beautiful beaches and multicultural crowd.
There are plenty of places to camp on cheaply on the way. I have done numerous surf trips between Sydney and Byron. My first stop is Seal Rocks 1 h north of Newcastle. You can camp there for about 10$ a person on National Park campground. 2nd stop could be somewhere like Crescent head.
